nest shelf by nendo
This is a CFRP-wood hybrid construction designer's furniture. Requested by the design office nendo, led by Ooki Sato, for their exhibition at London Design Festival in summer 2015, we were partly responsible for manufacturing the work.
The request was to use ultrathin boards for what constitute the shelves but without any risk of distortion, and the façade having the appearance of natural wood. To meet this request, we used CFRP and honey-comb panel at the core of each board and for design surfaces they were sandwiched between veneer sheets.
Assumed distortion with the weight load was resolved by the optimal layering calculated through analysis and shelves that were made with minimal layering possess both exceptional lightness and rigidity. The sandwich method (bonding) of veneer sheets and the core came about from our accumulated know-how and the end result truly satisfied our customer.
